But the old style Castrol of 60+ years ago, the stuff they used in racing
engines is still available in the UK - maybe elsewhere too? It's Castrol
Racing 40 and its got that wonderful smell of burnt castor oil that's so
evocative of racing motorcycle engines and all the rest, of the pre-war
years....

Amen on that smell! :-)

The story I was told over the years by several different "old-timers" was
that the Castrol R (or whatever it's been called at various times) was supposed

to be DRAINED out after the competition; it was NOT supposed to just sit
there in the crankcase until the next time the engine was fired up. NO idea
how
true or just exactly what havoc was supposed to have been wreaked by such oil
sitting in the bottom of the sump over a dormant period, but....

*Mrs Irrelevant: Oh, is it a jet?
*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
