According to Jack London, spit crackles at 25 below. I have been outside in
Minnesota when it was a lot colder than that, and I never noticed the
phenomenon.
On the other hand, I have seen ice fog.
Coldest place/time I have been? Brainerd Minnesota in the early 70s. It
went to 54 below overnight. It was still 38 below when I hit the track for
practice. The side and back windows in the race car had shattered
overnight. The windshield was stock glass and was OK.
