 I read an interview with one of the Porche designers many years ago.  He got 
his basic inspiration for the 928 from the Pacer.  He said he basically took 
the look of the Pacer stretched it out and lowered it.

You people smirk at a Pacer! Just remember it is what Honda copied for
its Civic.  Where else can anyone get a full width compact car?  Had it
had a decent engine they would still be building the things today.
