Part of the problem is the timing of the cylinders.  For the middle carb,
the two cylinders it feeds move together, but are 180 degrees apart in
the suck, squeeze, bang and blow  cycle.  So the intake pulses are evenly
spaced.  You can think of them happening at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock.
For the first and last two cylinders, the intake pulses are NOT evenly
spaced, coming at 12 and 3, or 12 and 9.  This uneven spacing can lead
to uneven fuel atomization and odd rich or lean characteristics at higher
speeds and under load.  For the most part, not really an issue on street
driven cars, though.
