Interesting to read about Randall's clear sticky goo, has anyone else ever
noticed
that with Castrol? Or could it have been escaped gasket gunk or something
like that?

I expect the early Castrol was XL or XXL, the GTX predecessor.

I once knew a very good and conscientious mechanic who had worked for
Castrol at one time. He had nothing but praise for the oil and the
research.and testing the firm did.
So I've used Castrol GTX in my old cars, lawn mowers, motor bikes ect. for
many years.

About 20 years and roughly 50k miles after an engine rebuild I changed the
big end bearings in my TR to restore the hot oil pressure to book
figure,(which was successful) and found the engine innards to be quite
clean wherever I could see, similarly with the rockers and their shaft when
I swapped the old head for an unleaded one. All seems quite satisfactory to
me.

OTOH you hear people saying that if the oil has a notice on the can saying
it fills the various specs why pour more money into the sump than you need,
just use the generic oils sold by the big discounters.

What is the expert view on using fully synthetic oil.in LBC's? My
understanding is that that is for use by highly stressed turbocharged high
performance engines with much closer tolerances than used to be the case.
Therefore it is overkill for old fashioned engines like ours.

You pay your money and take your choice of course but I for one would like
to hear more on this topic.
