Ronnnie,
The OD solenoid on my TR4A (assume its similar to yours) has a "pull-in" and
"hold" position. The pull-in current is much higher and will overheat the
solenoid if it stays at that current too long. If the linkage is improperly
adjusted so the solenoid cannot travel to the hold position, it will not
trigger the internal switch to reduce the current and will continue to draw
the higher pull-in current and overheat.
Check that the linkage is adjusted properly and/or check the current draw on
the solenoid to see that it drops significantly after it has initially
moved. There's an internal switch in the solenoid that energizes only the
"hold" coil once the solenoid has traveled far enough. You should be able
to check this with the linkage loose or disconnected from the solenoid. If
you can't measure current, you could check coil resistance with the solenoid
disconnected and manually moved. Unfortunately I've never seen any specs
for current draw or resistance of the coils.

Do any of you know if it is common for the OD solenoid to become slightly
more than warm once energized? I have never noticed before. I am currently
adjusting the D-type OD on my sports six.
