Just to prevent confusion for TR owners other than those with '81 TR8s and possibly TR7s, the 17 character VIN does not apply. Some 1980 cars used it, but it was not mandatory until the 1981 model year. The new VIN also ended the practice of titling the car in the year it was sold vice the year of manufacture.
