Oliver,
This is the exact same thing my Spit's speedo did just before the cable
broke. You might want to try pulling the cable and putting a few drops
of graphite on each end. Perhaps it's just the cable binding up a bit?
Just a thought.

Question - its clearly time to have the speedo rebuilt. The aesthetics
are fine, but the needle is as steady as my 100 year old aunt's hands.
