I had the exact same problem on my '73 TR6.
After replacing the latch, I discovered that the height adjuster in the
corner had vibrated loose. It was the left corner in my case.  After
adjusting it correctly, the problem was solved.
I honestly believe that the latch was fine... but it could have been part of
the problem.
