I've just completed a grueling 2-week mission, going over ALL of the triumph
list archives. Wow, I've learned a lot.
Here's my story:
Back in college in the 80's, I drove a nice 65 TR4A. In 1990, this car was
hit by an FAA official. Turns out the FAA is the only federal agency not
insured through the GAO. Took three (3) years to settle the case. It took
another ten (10) years to get my car back from the shop, "See You Later" Body
Works. Grady O'Neil, proprietor. During those ten years, I've had to listen
to how "Jerry Brown is still in it!" during the 1984 presidential race,
learned how Bush & Co. have screwed us all royally, learned how the EPA is
cracking down on independent, "honest" body shops, and been threatened with a
large crescent wrench when I deigned to inquire, "When is it going to be
ready, Grady?" His response, (which I invariably fell for) was "I know it's
takin' a long time, but when it's done, it's gonna be BITCHIN!!!".
Well, I finally got the car back. It is indeed "bitchin'". The work has been
excellent. But, when I last had the car I was in my 20s, lean and mean. Now
I'm in my early 40s, and the years have not been kind. I've put on a lot of
weight. Whereas I used to slide behind the wheel easily, now I have to wedge
myself in. That "Blumels" 16" wheel is really busting me. It is wedged tight
against my thighs. I can't move at all. I went for a test drive, and after a
few minutes, my legs went numb. Compounding the problem, I had Mexican for
lunch and I was "pressurized" quite a bit. I was really uncomfortable and had
to pull over. I simply could not shift my weight at all. I had to push hard
with my left hand on the seat and my right hand behind on the "shelf" behind
the seats. It was then that I learned that the steering column was a little
loose, as it moved upward about a half inch. That gave me enough room for to
achieve relief, thank God!
My question to the list (please bear with me, I'm a newbie) is, has anyone
fitted a smaller diameter steering wheel? I think I need at least 2 -3 inches
less to get comfortable.
