I don't think so, but I'm not certain.  The only wire involved in the
charging circuit that fits that description is the wire to the warning light
on the dash, and I just don't know what would happen if it were shorted to
ground, other than the warning light coming on.  But since Jack didn't
mention the light being on, I'd guess that's not what's happening (unless of
course it's burnt out or disconnected).

However, as Dave Massey has already pointed out, an open in the sense wire
(either brown or brown/red according to the diagram I have handy) could
cause the alternator to overcharge.
