Mike, My quote is about 2 years old now because I didn't follow through,
but I had a quote of $3000 - $3500 US to paint my 76 TR6 providing that I
did ALL of the disassembly and re-assembly myself (trim, interior,
bumpers, windscreen, etc). They were to do all of the body prep
(sanding, taking out dings, etc) and then paint it with a very high
quality multi stage paint. This quote was from a very high quality shop
that has many references from doing Cobras (real ones), mid year Vettes,
Porsches, and a number of award winning street rods. The owner of the
shop referenced one project (old Corvette) they did for a wealthy doctor
where just the body restoration including paint finish was $40,000. The
guy had another shop do the mechanical restoration. I'm not sure what
kind of shape a body has to be in to incur $40K worth of body labor and
materials, but the car's owner thought it was worth it.
For reference, my car has zero rust, has the original paint and body
panels, and other than an assortment of garage dings and door dings, has
never sustained any body damage. Oh course that quote was 2 years ago. If
I went back now, I don't know if I would get the same price. It would
probably be higher. :-(
