I had roughly the same  problem  with Casper (1957 TR3),  did pretty 
much what you have done with the same negative results.  I 
preparation for a road trip...to Triumphest I think I was trying to 
grease  the drive shaft spline  and to my horror discovered that the 
bolts holding the drive shaft to the transmission were loose!  There 
was at least  1/4" spacing and was bad enough that some threads were 
stripped!  Replacing the bolts and nuts and tightening with 
threadlock  solved  the  vibration problem completely...
