Henry F. Phillips from Portland Oregon invented this design for the
automotive Industry. In 1936 the American Screw Co. persuaded G.M. to use
the phillips style screw in the manufacture of Cadillacs. Henry lost the
patent in 1949.

Does anyone know where Phillips screwdrivers got their name? Why not
"X cross" or "double grip" or something more descriptive of their
design and function. And what do you call the other ones--straight,
normal, standard?

Inquiring minds want to know.
