Mike, I never did it on a TR, but many years ago in college I had an MGA FHC
and I cut off the gear shift lever so that when I rested the heel of my hand
on the transmission tunnel, the top of the knob was flush with the top of my
hand. I never had any problems shifting, and it shifted with a flick of the
wrist. As I recall, the MG's shift lever was closer to the driver than in
the TR, and that could be a problem in the TR.
