According to the workshop manual, they're both molybdenum manganese steel,
with the rods being "stamped" and the crank forged.

Oddly enough, one of the local racers was just the other day showing proof
that the rods are not cast iron ... it had about a 30 degree bend in it but
wasn't broken, not even cracked.
