That's right, there were two different sequences of TR3B commission numbers,
and TSF is the earlier one. According to Piggott, only the TCF series got
the 4-synchro gearbox.

It's fairly common for cars to be registered in the year after they were
made, and not unheard of for them to be registered two years after. (For
example, my early Sports 6 was completed in 1963, but registered as a 1965.)
Car dealers didn't like selling last year's model ... so the paperwork was
apt to have this year typed in.
There were also examples of cars being finished much later than the sequence
would indicate, because some fault was discovered that required moving them
back on the assembly line. And at least some possibility that the
registration was changed, either for a reason or by mistake. I wonder ...
what happened with "personal export" vehicles that weren't immediately
shipped to the US ?

By now, commission numbers bear little resemblance to what's actually in the
car ... but chances are that TS79838 originally had the crash box.
