My first guess would be that of altitude differences. UK spec cars rarely had
to climb mountains (what's the highest point in
the UK?), and slightly leaner settings for US cars would likely make the engine
a bit more tractable over terrain with bigger
changes in elevation. I would guess that cars going to continental Europe
likely had settings similar to US cars.
