All seals ,except for Teflon coated ones*, need some sort of lubrication
during install. If the seal is left dry the friction will cause the seal lip
material to burn from the friction.
For rubber seals a wipe of grease is enough, for felt seals I'd wet them with
non detergent motor oil then a wipe of grease. If you don't have non
detergent motor oil, just use grease. The key with any seal type is not to
have lube dripping on the outside during install.
* Teflon coated seals. The only application I know of so far is the B and C
series Cummins diesel engines. The seals must be installed dry so some of
the Teflon coating transfers from the seal to the shaft. This coating
reduces the amount of wear the shaft experiences. Neat trick.
