I once had this problem and it was none of the problems mentioned so far.
The bendix clutch in the starter was intermittently slipping and the
grinding sound was from the bendix. If the pinion and flywheel are meshing
ok, try another bendix.
Before you take the starter out, just try starting it from different engine
resting positions (push the car forward in top gear a bit to rotate it a bit
away from its usual resting position.) If it only gives problems in one
position it is probably your ring gear (so heat, remove, rotate 180 degrees
and replace.)
To make sure the solenoid is not chattering due to low voltage when the
starter motor runs, just hold the solenoid or put a stethoscope onto it and
use the remote starter switch. You should feel/hear it click on but not
chatter. You could also put a multimeter across the battery and watch if the
voltage is jumping around when you are running the starter motor. Hope this
