Mark,

Make sure you have the correct Flywheel/Ringgear combination to go with 
your starter.
I had the same trouble with my 3A, bought a new Gear Reduction Starter, 
It started to skip and when I started to pull the transmission I found a 
bolt on ringgtear where a shrink on should have been.
And why not... that's the story of MY life..
