Good responses. I am convinced that it was the Grosse Jet (not a substitute)
that stuck. I cleaned them several times, tapped them, etc., but could still
easily make them stick solid by gentle pressure on the outer (lower) ball. I
assumed it was a varnish build-up or something.
Just be aware that it can happen. Perhaps the old ones were better made or
there was a bad batch made.
And always carry a spare or good walking shoes.
