I think welding wheel studs is certainly serious overkill, even if the
"brittle" theory is wrong. When I found a few loose studs on my rear wheel
hub I glued them at the back with Araldite and have had no problem since.

PS. Araldite is a two part glue (epoxy?) widely available on the eastern
side of the Atlantic. Don't know about colonial distribution.
