Bob,
I've rebuilt a number of overdrives, mostly 'A' types, and needed to prime
the pump only once; but without it, it would not build pressure. After
you've tried all the usual tricks, like operating the o/d manually by
pushing down on the lever opposite the solenoid, try priming the pump before
tearing the whole thing down again.
Remove the drain plug (big and brass) and the screen.
Remove the plug at the bottom of the oil pump.
Rotate the gearbox (turn a rear wheel) until the pump is in its extreme up
position.
Fill the void with grease or vaseline.
Replace the plug.
Replace the drain plug and screen.
Check the oil level.
Start the engine and try manual engagement again.
Good luck.
