No, I'm pretty sure this was a running engine.  Just a WAG, but I'd say he
was trying to troubleshoot a longevity problem ...

If the flywheel is 12 inches in diameter (6 inch radius) and displacing 5/8
of an inch fore/aft, this translates to a 6 degrees of angular displacement
(+/- 3) hich isn't very much.  But enough to fatigue the metal,
appearently.
