Not to worry, Cosmo, you'll get no argument from me! Actually, what I did say
yesterday was: "The same way as you would jump-start any other car: Ensure
that positive is connected to positive and negative to negative. You might
consider making one of the connections on the Herald to a good ground rather
than to the battery terminal."
I probably should have been a bit clearer and said "..consider making THE
NEGATIVE CONNECTION on the Herald to a good ground...."
I, too, don't always do this, although I know I should. After all, I do have
a good friend who once managed to blow up a battery in his face. Fortunately,
the primary wounds were to his pride and his clothing. And it seems to me
(more fodder for the, er, discussion?) that modern "sealed" batteries are
less likely to give off the quantities of gas required to make a nice BOOM
when sparked. It also seems to me that, with today's plastic-clad cars, it's
harder than ever to make an accidental metal-to-metal contact with anything
except the jumper cables. ;-)

*Mrs Irrelevant: Oh, is it a jet?
*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
