I think TR3's and 4's have similar if not identical H2O pumps.....
If so.............
New pumps and old pumps are not the same. The pulley must match the pump,
always!!! They don't seem to be interchangable........at least not without
a lot of checking.........
If there is the slightest mismatch, the poorly engineered pulley will wobble
a bit on the shaft.......wear the shaft, and the pulley bore......and no
washer, no locknut, nothing will keep it from wobbling.......same thing will
happen if they washer and nut are not tight..........
Once this happens, nothing short of replacing the pump, or the pump shaft (or
having the shaft remade or knurled) and a new, correct pulley that fits (or
bored and sleeved) will work.......everything seems to be critical....if
there is the slightest bit of movement.......it will only get much worse!
The trouble I've had with the new pumps (no grease zerk)......is that don't
always match up with flywheel and generator........which also rapidly wears
them our........so check everything twice!
Don't feel bad...........it's a big problem.......and, one not easily solved!
I went through a period when I had pulleys from TRF and Moss, two
each........and none had the same dimensions!
My best luck has been to get two used, old style (with grease zerk) pumps
from Cris Mills in Wisconsin (Company: BRITISH SPORTS CAR CENTER Screen
Name: STEPTOE2222@ITOL.COM Work Phone: 920-833-6534
Cellular: 920-660-0281)........tear them down.......find two good bearings
out of the four, have the shaft turned if it is bad (he doesn't check
them......but some of them are still in prime condition.........pig in a
poke) get a seal kit from Vic Brit......reassemble with marine
grease.......and still check everything twice!!! The last I bought from him
were about $50 each, the bearing kit....$10-12.......got one good pump..you
will need the shop manual and the article in "The Vintage Triumph" #52, page
1037......is very helpful........I'll be glad to send you a copy, if you
don't have that issue......
Good luck!
