Steven:
Stop by any auto trim shop and you'll be amazed at the
vast selection of color shades available, and I won't
even go into the grain texture differences that exist.
I have samples of 42 reds from one manufacturer alone.
Multiply that by the 3 wholesalers I deal with and you
can see there are a lot of choices out there.
All of the upholstery kit manufacturers produce their
products in generic shades, which are only correct for a
specific car once in a great while. When buying a red
trim kit from Moss, TRF, Skinner etc., you'll get the
same shade for Truimph, MG, Austin-Healey, etc. You can
bet money that all of these auto manufacturers did not
originally produce their interior trim in the exact same
shades and grains.
Even Triumph changed shades and grains occasionally.
A good example of this is with the red colors. The dark
burgandy/red from Moss is a pretty close match for the
TR2 and TR3 smallmouth cars, but the TR3A's used a red
that was more of a 'tomato red', and the early TR4's red
was much brighter as you found on the hidden areas of
your car. Unless you are a purist, the kit colors are a
good compromise, but you'll need to get everything from
one source to ensure that everything matches. As color
variations can occur during manufacturing, and kit
makers can change material sources for various reasons,
and trim fades with time, I'd also recommend buying
everything at the same time.
