A while back some one was asking about the proper colour for the rear
portion, metal top, fabric top etc. for the TR4 surry top.
I've been reading Michael cook's "Triumph Cars in America" and found a
reference that might be of interest to the person who asked. On page 68
there is a photo of two tr4s described as: " One of the first U.S. publicity
photos of the TR4, showing a white roadster and a red car with white
hardtop, an option that was soon dropped".
On page 76 there is another photo of what appears to be the same car but
with the soft surrey panel in place. In both photos the windshield frame and
the backlight frame are clearly white (as is the steel roof panel). The
fabric panel appears to be black. (These are b/w reproductions but the top
is definitely darker than the body.)
So if the car in question was an early TR4 then it may have been "proper" to
have the hardtop panel, backlight surround and windscreen frame white over
the red body.
