Scott,
No lessons on over torquing bolts. To be honest the aluminum block was
an inferior piece of crap to begin with. Since your car was a 1970 it
may have the original factory sealing block. There was a recall , The
replacement part # 151134 was made in 1970 and was issued because of
warpage & leakage. Unfortunately the replacement was not a whole lot
better.
You can use a heli-coil with the pan in place although I don't recommend
it because of the possibility of metal filings getting into the oil pan.

The only repair that has worked for me was dropping the oil pan,
removing the sealing block and using a KEENSERT in every hole. The
aluminum used was brittle and I'm sure the metallurgy of the time would
be substandard by today's materials.
You can find KEENSERTS in the Granger catolog. Helicoils are more
popular but not even close in sealing and torque numbers. They are
available in the fine thread sizes as to keep all the bolts the same.
