Thanks very much to Dave Massey for his reply.

I also found two very good articles on the VTR website, by Dan 
Masters and Charlie Brown.  Thanks to all!  For the present I am 
going to remain blissfully ignorant, or at least pretend that no 
problem exists. :-)
