Thanks to all who replied. Mine twisted off w/o a problem. The PO had buried
each under a glob of plasticene so even after getting most of the goo off it was
hard to see how they were held on.
In the end mine (probably original) were metal caps, split down each side, that
slid over the post from the backside and gripped it with little tangs stamped in
the fastener.
Others have described plastic plugs that insert from the front (like 'modern
cars') and the flat speed nuts (like on a TR3) so I suspect the original type
caps for the '4 are not usually supplied when ordering replacements.
