Graham, the slot in the distributor is offset, so on that basis, you are
correct. However, there are a couple of other considerations. To make sure
that the timing is correct in all aspects, check the point gap first,
according to the manual. Then, with the distributor cap off, pull the #1
spark plug, put your finger in the spark plug hole, and turn the engine
over in the normal direction of travel until you feel compression pressure.
Then continue turning the crank until the timing mark is at TDC.
Now, look at the position of the rotor. Place the distributor cap next to
the distributor and turn it so that if placed on the distributor, the key
would fit the keyway. Is the rotor pointing to the terminal with the #1
plug wire? If not, that's part of your answer. Next, check all the plug
wires. The distributor rotor turns counter-clockwise, so check each wire
counter-clockwise from #1, in the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4.
If that doesn't do it, I suppose there could be something amiss with the
distributor drive.
Cheers.
