Richard,

I think you have gotten yourself into a messy corner.  Take a detailed look at
the exploded parts picture for the A-Type.  The actuating arm is attached to a
shaft that runs horizontal over and through to the other side where the
soleniod pushes on it.  There is a little lever arm on the shaft inside the
case  that pushes up on the operating valve rod to lift the ball and release
the oil under pressure.

It sounds like you have pushed the lever up too high and past the rod and it
is now traped on the other side of the rod.  You should be able to get it back
by removing the operating valve cover cap and with a magnetic parts catcher or
those things with the little fingers on the end grab and remove the ball and
then grab and lift the rod.  The actuating lever should be able to move back
into the correct position...  drop the rod down into the casing and replace
the ball... screw in tha OV cap and you should be back to square one.

In theory... and if your very lucky... you should be able to do this from the
access pannel in the gearbox cover.
