My understanding is that the wire wheels fitted to TRs were designed to fit
other manufacturers cars with splined hubs as a permanent fitment. The
adapter idea came later in the case of TRs.
It was found that there was insufficient clearance for the standard studs
when the wheel was fitted to the adapter hence the requirement for short
studs and slim nuts.
This is not the only solution however. I wish to retain my standard studs so
that it is easy to revert to standard wheels or alloys. I will be fitting
9mm spacers behind the adapter.
There was a discussion on the list a while ago regarding the pros and cons
of fitting spacers. I think the pros outweigh the cons so that is the route
I will be taking.
