my 72 gt6 is pretty stable now (after replacing just about everything)
#1) the engine still seems to run hot. i've added a secondary water temp
guage and that guage reads up to 190. i mounted the sensor to the opposite
site of the thermostat. the orig is mounted on the drivers side, i mounted
this one where the water comes out to go to the heater. the original guage
goes up about 3/4 of the way, not into the red section but significantly past
mid point. the whole interior of the car gets hot. this bothers me
(especially now that it is summer). i still don't think this is normal. what
do you guys think ? the engine is newly rebuilt (including high dome factory
pistons from england and a mild race cam). before starting the engine for the
first time i was careful to check everything twice and ran the starter motor
without ignition (to prevent starting) off and on (10 / 20 second increments)
till i saw full oil pressure on an oil pressure guage (hooked up to engine)
and noted oil coming out rocker arm onto that assembly. also checked
antifreeze flow, level before starting. i called the person/dealer i bought
all the engine parts from. he says that since i did not prime the oil
passages with an electric drill before starting the engine i have ruined it
and that is what is causing the engine heat. since the engine runs perfect,
has perfect power, does not burn or leak oil (ya, isn't that a shock, it
doesn't leak) i find it hard to believe i 'ruined' the engine. i really would
like some 3rd opinions from you guys. maybe i just need to accept the fact
that gt6's run hot ? or with these pistons and cam ? it starts great, it
runs great, i have a slight challenge with idle especially when hot. if idle
drops below 1k rpm it wants to die but i think that is another problem of high
altitude and worn jets. (should mention radiator, thermo, water pump all have
been replaced).
#2) my tach cable broke last week (always something) after waiting a week for
a new one i put it in yesterday, started it up, noted the tach was jumping
around a bit and poof within 10 seconds tach dropped to zero. pulled the
cable off the dist and sure enough the inner cable twisted right off like the
orig did last week. so it is spinning in the dist and something bound it.
could the tach have actually gotten that hard or whatever all of a sudden ?
there is no kink in the cable all the way through, its a nice straight clear
run. or was this just coincidence ? i can get the tach out pretty easy if
you guys know a simple way to test it (for binding). i put a battery
screwdriver on the speedo when fixing that and the speedo read 30mph (kinda
fun to watch). can you do that with tach too ?
thanks guys !!!
