Oh boy... There is a buyers guide already on the TR7/TR8 website:
http://www.team.net/TR8/mp/html/buy_guide.html

I can drive my TR7 for 700+ miles in a stretch in comfort - I can't say the
same for my spit.

I like the styling of the convertible - It just looks good.

The engine suffers from the same problem as the stag (the TR7 motor) and so
examples with bumb engines are common. The Good thing is that these can be
picked up dirt cheap, throw in a reliable engine and presto! Fast car. The
car, when not looked after, can rust very badly and it can become terminal
quite quickly. Check the suspension mounting points & the door pillars.

> How Cheap is Cheap??

I picked up my TR7 for 1k, a friend just picked his up for $500 - both had
bad engines.
Perfect running TR7's have been going for about 2-3k, TR8's for about 7-8k -
good running examples not perfect go for much less.

> What do we know about modified TR7s??

Since the TR7 was designed from the get go to accommodate the Rover V8
motor, it's got a very large engine compartment. This coupled with it's
really straight forward RWD setup makes engine swaps easy. Buick V6,
Toyota, Mazda, Buick V8, Rover V8, Mitsubishi - I've seen them all.

> My personal experience was extended use of a friend's TR8 a number of
years

You either like the styling or you don't - Somebody who doesn't like the car
will probably fail to understand the people who do and their motivations.
Anyhow - I really like my Spitfire and I've also driven just about every
other triumph but for shear grin factor, my TR7 V8 wins hands down. Corners
better, handles like it's on rails - accelerates like a bat out of hell. -
Oh, and that V8 exhaust tone - can't beat that.
