Darrel,
The baked on crud exhaust valves was likely due to worn valve guides
that caused oil to leak along the stem from up above. This oil was then
baked by the hot exhaust gasses.
The intake valves won't show this phenomena because the oil that leaks
down just winds up in the combustion chamber, and is burnt- causing a
smoking exhaust. Excessive oil in the CC will also "coke" up the head.
