Hi Clark,
I just looked at mine and it appears to be stainless. It could be chrome but
it doesn't have any pitts or anything and all the other chrome pieces on the
car need replating. I would suggest trying some fine steel wool followed by
a mildly abrasive polish. If you grind it there probably won't be enough
left to polish:^)
