Managed to have a look at the Mk 1 GT 6 I'm interested in on Sunday . 6 Hour
drive and a wee bit of a disappointment . Pretty rare car in South Africa
mind you .
Last time I saw the vehicle , about 3 years ago , it was a complete non
runner with removed front suspension . A few bits and pieces were missing (
most of which I gave to the owner ) .
When the owner phoned me and said he wanted to sell it , I was led to
believe it was now complete , 100 % original , running very well and 99 %
restored . Not entirely correct me thinks !
The following are not original :
Wipers , windscreen washer jets , steering wheel , interior rear view mirror
, interior door trim , window winder handles , interior door handles ,
gearbox and gear lever knob .
The following are missing :
Body number plate . Fibreboard radiator cowl . Engine valances . Gearbox
bridging piece ( H shaped dash support bracket that bolts to floor ) . Choke
knob . Heater control knob . Door pull handles ( same as MGB believe it or
not ! ) . Sun visors . Speedo angle drive ( on o/d ) . Padded transmission
tunnel side and top covers ( at the arm rest ) . Passenger foot rest panel (
unique to Mk 1 GT 6 I believe ) . Smiths heater valve and three-way union on
inlet manifold .
Unfortunately parts are not readily available locally .
The speedometer , overdrive and windscreen washer system are unfortunately
not working . Speedo stuck on 100 and something .
Engine number KC 8617 E . What does the E stand for ? I know HE means high
compression engine .
Commission number KC 52713 O . Wrong me thinks , but difficult to make out
correct number as the plate is badly scratched and in terrible shape . Guess
it should either be KC 5271 O , KC 2713 O or maybe even KC 5273 O .
Registration documentation are with sellers son , who is visiting family in
the UK and would return in a few days , so could not be checked .
Paint code indicated as 19 and trim 11 . Issue No. BS AU 48 1965 is also
stamped at the bottom of the commission plate . No idea on the meaning .
At least the car is running , albeit very sluggish , and the car has been
repainted Signal Red . Paint not professionally applied , but good enough .
Gearbox ( transmission ) shifts quite good in all the gears BUT I have a
strong feeling that the gearbox is either from a 2000 Saloon or 2.5 Saloon
, but due to a home made gearbox tunnel cover that could not be removed it
was impossible for me to check the serial numbers . I could only see the
following :
Starter on right hand side .
Solenoid horizontally on left hand side .
Clutch slave cylinder on right hand side , but I may be wrong as I did not
make a note of that .
Gear lever has a black plastic knob with the shift pattern inscribed in
white on it and the overdrive switch in the middle . Gear lever knob is
round / cylindrical , with a flat top and tapers down like this if you
should view it from the side \_/ . I recall a chrome ring around the side of
the knob .
Switch is serrated like this /\/\/\/\ if you should view it from the side .
Overdrive switch shifts forward and backwards with the wording IN at the top
/ forward part and OUT at the bottom / rear part . When switch is shifted it
covers either the IN or OUT wording .
Shift pattern look something like this :
1 3
IN
Out
2 4 R
Overdrive does not engage .
Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated .
