IMO the 48 spoke wheels are adequate, if you only put stock tires on them,
don't drive hard, and do periodically lube the splines and
tighten/true/replace the spokes.
If you are planning on running sticky tires, or going racing, then I would
look for alternatives. Switching to steel wheels is one alternative,
however don't forget that the wheel studs have to change also. One way
around this is to make up spacer plates to go under the wire wheel adaptors,
but then you're back to not being original and a sharp eyed judge might spot
the spacers.
