>I've read in Piggott's book and other places that 48-spoke wheels are "barely
adequate" and may be unsafe. My TR3A came with a set of 6 48-spoke wheels.
Should I be worried about using them when my resto is finished? I really like
the wire wheel look, and I would rather not put out hundreds of dollars for
a few more spokes per wheel. Any consensus on the safety of 48-spoke wheels,
or the lack thereof?
I believed it enough to buy 4 new Dayton 60-spoke wheels for the TR4. The
design looks a LOT stronger. There are spokes in two different locations on
the rim, for more triangulation. Also, I am told that Dayton has stronger
spokes
and sets them tighter, so that re-truing is generally not needed.
I'd say to use the original 48-spokers for when originality is the goal, and
Dayton 60-spokes when you want to drive it like a sports car. Since 60-spokes
were an option when my TR4 was new, I figure I can have both.
