Either that really isn't a resistor (unlikely) or else it was supplied
already wired to the coil. Assuming it is a resistor (can't think of what
else it might be, in a ceramic case), it will work the same either way.
But, your described wiring will work fine.
BTW, the resistor doesn't even have to go between the coil and hot wire.
For my backup points configuration, I actually wire the resistor between the
coil and points, seems to run just fine.
