I goofed:

Works made for hire is more related to performances etc...

Original works are covered by a term of 70 years after the author's death.
In the case of a collaborative effort, that is 70 years after the
longest-lived of the authors. There seem to be a few grandfather clauses
active as well.

Here's a better link:

http://www.ksu.edu/academicservices/intprop/webtutor/sld009.htm

In either event, it's a lot longer than the time between the 60s and the 90s
when the NSX and other knockoffs were everywhere.

What constitutes "works made for hire"? Just curious.

I assume that all the patents for internal components etc. have expired.
However the copyright on looks one would have thought would have kept the
cars looking a little more different than they do.

According to the US government's copyright faq at
http://www.loc.gov/copyright/faq.html, the Sonny Bono
Copyright Term Extension Act provides that for "works
made for hire, the term will be 95 years from the year
of first publication or 120 years from the year of creation,
whichever expires first."

So I guess that begs the question or "what is it that makes a Ferrari look
like a Ferrari that can't be copied"? Clearly from numerous ripoffs it can't
be a lot more than the prancing horse logo.

Remember when Ferraris really stood out from the pack, visually? Now they
hardly look different from any number of less-expensive sports car
offerings.

I like to go to these gov't asset sales in Victoria. This caught my eye and
wondered if maybe someone knows of a mail list this should go to. I would
like to know why our Provincial gov't has a Ferrari in the first place.
