If the wiring harness isn't cracking & looking like it may short, fall
apart, or cause a fire, don't replace it. You are maintaining originality,
& driving the thing like a crazed gas-fume addict, which is the whole point
anyway.
My GT6 is a "early 1972", that is, it is a 1972 model built in December,
1971 according to the commission plate. It came with & has a ceramic
ballast resistor, but since I added a Lucas Sports Coil, the resistor is no
longer hooked up. If your GT6's previous owner installed a Sports Coil, he
may have removed the ballast resistor. There would also likely be some
weird ad lib stuff going on around the coil & alternator where the resistor
was removed from the circuit.
There's something funny about GT6 MkIII wiring diagrams - mine didn't match
the MkIII diagram in the Triumph shop manual or any Hanes or whatever book,
but somebody sent me (years ago) a photocopy of one that is correct. This
seems to be a sort of standard trivia item about the GT6.

I haven't written to this list before, but have been following the dialogue
for over 3 years...great resource and fun to follow! I recently acquired a
1972 GT6 (very early model) that needed rescued and atttempting my first
restoration project...I have books, enthusiasm, some great Brit car advisors
that are very patient...but lttle personal experience in this area...esp.
with
GT6s. Would note...been having a blast working on this little piece of
history!
While I have many questions on an assortment of matters...will contain my
questions to one area...ignition system. I thought about replacing the
entire
wiring harness, but except for the ignition area, it really doesn't look too
bad. Can you imagine...after 30 years, the ignition wiring does not follow
the schematic -e.g. has 12 volt ignition coil and missing the ballast
resistor....wiring looks rather dicey too....surprising!! My question is
this...Should I try to rescue the current system or do a complete tear-down
and put something more modern in? My preference is the latter...what system
would be the easiest to install for a novice...would want to replace
everthing
from ignition switch onward. Follow-up question - what is the best type of
fire extinguisher for electrical fires caused by an inept British car
enthusiast??
