I was sorry to hear of your experience. I guess the lesson to be learned
here is to have the car checked by someone in the area with some
expertise in that particular model. I have a friend who was interested
in a TR6 in Tennessee. It looked great in the picture and the owner was
very believable in his description of the car. While I do not belong to
the 6-Pack organization, the president of our club does and asked a favor
of the club in the Tennessee area. Dan Masters offered to go take a look
at the car for us. He contacted the owner and set up a time that was
convenient for him. Dan drove the car, gave it a thorough check, wrote a
detailed report of his findings and refused to accept anything for his
time or gas. We also used a covered transport company that was
recommended on one of the lists. When the car was received in
Massachusetts there were no surprises. The car was exactly as described
by the owner and Dan and was delivered in the time frame specified by the
transport company.
I was recently given the opportunity to check out a car in Massachusetts
for a New York 6-Pack member. I knew the car and the dealer who was
selling it. In this case the car was junk. In 2 minutes time I could
tell the car was not what he would expect for his money and didn't need
to give it the thorough inspection that I would normally do. He saved
his money and soon hooked up with a much better car that is fairly local
to him.
In short I would suggest to anyone interested in buying a car from a "far
off land" to use the network of friends available to you in the e-mail
lists and club chapters.
