There was a brief thread on precisely this subject (or near it--a clutch
cover and clutch came apart) on the FOT list, and the driver in question
had a foot and ankle messed up, even with a scattershield.
The stock car I crewed on in Florida had a 1/4" steel bellhousing, which
one would think would contain most any detonating clutch, but when I was
inspecting the car, found a seven-inch by three-inch tear in the top which
had been folded back down and welded.... There's a lot of kinetic energy in
that part of the engine at 6000 or 7000 rpm. Especially in the big pieces.
