Patrick -
On my '3, one side came out very easily, just a few light taps, while
the other side was a bear that required an afternoon of cajoling.
Randall makes a good point about the threads for pulling - I was not
able to pursue that due to rust. If your threads are OK, then PB
Blaster and a threaded rod, perhaps with some judicious hammer taps
and some heat to break the rust up a little, ought to get you there.
If yours is in the shape mine was in, you need a big hammer and maybe
a big 2-jaw puller. Be aware that if you misshape the end of the
bolt too much by hammering, that it may not go through the frame. I
wound up moving it a little ways, then had to cut the end off with a
hacksaw and use a 2-jaw puller on the frame and some cheap socket
extension bars to push the thing through the frame.
My point is to use a block of wood if you can. One thing to be
careful of if using a puller is that it's possible to distort the
frame walls - mine are now a little bit. I'm not worried, but if it
were any worse I would be ... exercise care and keep checking!
Reassemble with a liberal amount of anti-seize so you spare yourself
or the next owner the same pain.
HTH!
