Man, I hate defending the 'Evil Empire', but ... just how do you suggest
they (M$) force the maker of your laptop to update the O/S already on the
shelf every time a new patch comes out ???
Windoze 2K is already obsolete (just ask them <g>), but they are still
offering security patches all the way back to 3.11. And, they respond PDQ
to newly found security bugs in their software. Hardly 'no effort', IMO.
Did I mention their free CD with patches and information on how to protect
yourself (or your company) from security threats ? Or the free
semi-automatic updates from their web site ?
I still don't like MS, but IMO they have taken security fairly seriously.
It's unfortunately true that they're such a broad target, everyone aims for
it.
