The distributor has both vacuum advance and vacuum retard units.

The port on the top of the front carb that normally goes to the vacuum
advance
is plugged. (The PO had connected the vacuum advance and retard units to
the
breathing ports on the side of the carbs)

The page 511 (86.35.00 sheet 1) of the Bentley manual says that the vacuum
advance for US engines was disabled by sealing the pipe with a protective
plug. As I read this, the vacuum advance unit should still be on the carb
but
no hose connected.

Can anyone confirm the above.

My car (CC57xxx) had just the same configuration. The vacuum retard was
connected and the advance was capped off. I have since connected the
advance and enjoy a little bit better mid-throttle performance (although it
may be more placebo than fact).
